Many children and adults with brain and body differences do not learn language in ways we might expect. This can lead to frustration, worry, fear, miscommunication, and dysregulation—for everyone.
Fortunately, there are many devices and tools that can be used to teach someone how to understand and use language, even when they are not able to consistently use their own voice to express it. These tools and strategies are referred to as Augmentative and Alternative Communication, or AAC.
